I am a natural loner who once did power networking following the principles in Douglass Hyde's "Dedication and Leadership." In the process I have found that there are [at least] two levels of networking.

1. Go all in as a member of a group you like/want to infiltrate. Go in humble, earn cred from diligence, earn the respect of those who are the real doers of the group.

2. Having established status in one group, go in as the distinguished visitor to other groups. There is still the element of serving -- where your and the group's interests intersect -- but you don't have to go in quite as humble as you are bringing something to the table going in.

I've done both, and had a blast. Private message me and I'll give more details -- as well as a site suitable for building networks.
